Successfully shooting birds in flight is fruitful and exciting, but it takes a lot of patience and there is no single sure firefight for it. The task would be much easier if every bird on the flight was sprayed slow-flying, high-contrast against a clear blue sky. But try to take a picture of a puffin flying 50 miles square feet against a dark cliff in flat light! The power of the camera and lens, the style and speed of the bird's flight, the auto-focus performance, the quality of the light and the effect of plumage on the changing background - all these factors and much more can make a bird's picture in flight comparable and depressing.
