Common names include African snook, Victoria perch (a misleading brand name, because the species, isn't native to Lake Victoria, though they need to be been introduced there), and lots of local names in various African languages, like the Luo name but or mouth. In Tanzania, it's called sangria, Sankara, or check. In Francophone African countries, it's referred to as Capitaine. Its name within the Hausa language is gowan rule, meaning "water elephant".
